Thane, because of its proximity and good transport links, is often considered an extension of Mumbai. Many visitors who arrive here often seek a bustling urban environment, like that of the neighbouring metropolis. But spend time in Thane and you discover a destination with a very different character. The city is a complete getaway without having to venture too far from Mumbai, with lakes, greenery, contemporary shopping districts and cultural attractions.
Thane is part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and is well connected by road and rail. It is also less crowded than many areas of central Mumbai. Well-planned residential neighbourhoods, waterfront promenades, and public parks encouraged me to explore at a comfortable pace. Whether visiting for a weekend or including Thane in a longer itinerary for Maharashtra, the city offers enough attractions to make for an enjoyable stay.
Thane’s lakes create a refreshing change of scenery
Known as the “City of Lakes”, Thane has numerous natural and artificial lakes scattered throughout the region. Upvan Lake continues to be one of the city’s most popular attractions, with walking paths, landscaped gardens and peaceful surroundings making it perfect for my morning and evening visits. The lakefront is a significant gathering spot for residents during festivals and cultural events.
Masunda Lake or Talao Pali is another beautiful waterfront destination. Boat, walk by the lakeside, visit the cafes nearby and enjoy the views over the water. The open spaces were a welcome relief for me from the hustle and bustle of life usually associated with nearby Mumbai.
Thane’s parks and public spaces invite relaxed exploration
Besides its lakes, Thane also boasts several parks and recreational spots for visitors to enjoy the outdoors. The Yeoor Hills at the edge of Sanjay Gandhi National Park are a favourite with travellers who like nature walks, birdwatching and short drives through forested surroundings. The area gave me a chance to enjoy greenery without going far from the city.
Well-maintained gardens also help create the relaxed setting of Thane, along with pedestrian-friendly areas and waterfront promenades. Rather than a tightly packed sightseeing itinerary, I enjoyed these spaces at the city’s more relaxed pace throughout the day.
Thane’s shopping and dining districts offer plenty of variety
Thane boasts modern shopping malls and an increasing number of cafes and restaurants offering diverse cuisines. Retail stores, entertainment and places to eat for families draw people to shopping centres such as Viviana Mall and Korum Mall. I also found independent cafes and neighbourhood restaurants scattered across the city.
The restaurant menus feature North Indian, South Indian, Asian, Italian, and continental cuisines, with Maharashtrian specialities. I also found tonnes of new desserts, baked goods, coffee and light meals to enjoy while I was there.

The best thing about choosing hotels in Mumbai is that cities like Thane become easier to explore. Choose hotels near Thane Railway Station, key commercial areas, or well-known shopping districts for convenient access to transport, eateries, and local sights. Staying near the station also reduced my travel time between attractions.
Thane has something for every budget, from budget hotels to premium business properties and serviced apartments. Many hotels provide on-site restaurants, parking, fitness centres, meeting facilities, and travel assistance for local sightseeing. I booked mine in advance as visitor demand usually increases during weekends and festive periods.

Its convenient location, range of attractions and comfortable surroundings make it suitable for families, business travellers and weekend visitors alike. Thane is not merely a neighbouring city, but a rewarding destination in its own right.
